Trained Jeweler, Jacob Cohen, learned at a young age the importance of time. Born in Havana, Cuba in 1946, a period of upheaval and domination by the militant force of Batista. Jacob relied on his mind's eye for comfort, envisioning ways to escape the oppression of his surroundings and build a better life. Jacob's parents, of Polish descent, demanded freedom for he and his brother, Israel. They made arrangements through a Jewish organization to exile by way of Jamaica, to the United States. A long boat ride brought him, his father and brother, to our land of liberty. Once in the states they moved to the Bronx and then Brooklyn, where he attended one of the largest High Schools in the city. He sought solace in highly focused activities that permitted him to work with his hands, such as woodworking and metalworking. In his first job out of school, he designed custom handrails for decadent buildings. Soon after he dabbled in the more “spirited” field of jewelry design. He served as an apprentice at the manufacturing company before working as a bench jeweler at a jewelry store. At 22 he met Ana, his one and only affection, to whom he has now been married for over 35 years. They later learned that fate was determined; they had coincidentally occupied the same plane in their migration from the Caribbean to the United States. Entrepreneurial independence eventually called, prompting he and his brother to start their own jewelry manufacturing company, deservingly called Liberty Jewelry. Predominately serving the fashion conscious Latin markets; Puerto Rico, Miami, Chicago and NYC, their business enjoyed 20 years of success until Jacob's brother fell ill, forcing him to re-evaluate the creative direction of the company. Bryan Cohen shares his father's proclivity for the art of design. Born 1974 in Valley Stream, Long Island, he inherited a strong interest in architecture. The resourceful kid with “promise” won a competition in grade school to build a model house- impressing teachers with his ingenuity and analytical skills. Bryan was well rounded, having traveled across Europe, Israel and the Caribbean, where relatives resided. Knowledgeable of current events, the media and fashion trends, he offered new perspectives to his traditional thinking parents. Bryan was the first generation of his family to attend college. He studied Architecture, Art and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland, earning a Bachelors of Science degree. He moved back to New York to help his father, who have gave him a rickety old desk and challenged him to revive the company, starting with it's name. “Vintage jewelry was hot on the market. My job was to take something old and beautiful, and make it new,” Bryan explains. Months were spent selling bracelets door to door and attending trade shows to showcase their designs. Bryan analyzed the competition while building a strong distribution base until afforded the opportunity to focus on brand imaging. “Style is fleeting but true fashion, like love, is everlasting,” Bryan explains, which led him to name their new company, “Timeless Designs”. When he met the love of his life Rachel, he designed her engagement ring with as much articulacy and originality as Jacob & Bryan do with all of their pieces. “I'm a perfectionist,” he admits. Jacob and Bryan both recognize that there is a romantic and elusive quality to jewels of the past, much like their own pasts. While antique jewelry has only recently acquired it's strong influence in the fashion world, Jacob & Bryan have years of experience mirroring its look with renewed elegance. A touch of old and a dash of new, this father and son duo have proven that a girl can in fact live “happily ever after”- along with her jewelry.
